BBVA Chairman & CEO presents the 3rd INTEGRA Award to the Basque non-profit Lantegi Batuak13/07/11
Francisco González, Chairman & CEO of BBVA, presented the 3rd BBVA INTEGRA Award to the Basque non-profit Lantegi Batuak, which for more than 25 years has been creating innovative, high-quality work opportunities for the disabled. The BBVA INTEGRA Award is a €200,000 prize designed to promote excellence and innovation in the integration of disabled people into the workplace and encouraging equal opportunities and higher living standards for this segment of society. “Lantegi Batuak is a marvelous example of what we call social entrepreneurship. For BBVA, social entrepreneurs are those who recognize a social problem and are able to create, manage, and develop an economically sustainable business initiative that drives social change,” said BBVA Chairman & CEO during the Award ceremony.
This prize, awarded for the first time in 2009, is part of an initiative launched by BBVA to acknowledge the efforts of non-profit organizations and self-employed entrepreneurs that develop projects for the integration of the disabled into the workplace and create and pursue the best practices in this field. Lantegi Batuak was the third to win this €200,000 award. Last year’s INTEGRA Award was presented to the Mallorca-based organization amadip.esment. The first ever winner of the award was the Catalonian artisan cooperative Taller de Tejido Manual de Teixidors.
“We can honestly say that Lantegi Batuak is a marvelous example of what we call social entrepreneurship,” said Francisco González, Chairman & CEO of BBVA, while presenting the award. He added, “We believe that social entrepreneurs embody the BBVA vision of working to better the future by creating innovative proposals inspired by values to improve the lives of others.”
There were 196 candidates for the third annual award. They were evaluated by a jury comprised of José María Ibáñez of the Federación Empresarial Española de Asociaciones de Centros Especiales de Empleo, FEACEM (Spanish Business Association of Special Employment Centers), Luis Cayo Pérez of the Comité Español de Representantes de Personas con Discapacidad, CERMI, (Spanish Committee of Representatives of Persons with Disabilities), Alberto Durán of the ONCE Foundation, Enrique Galván of the Confederación Española de Organizaciones a favor de las Personas con Discapacidad Intelectual, FEAPS (Spanish Federation of Organizations for People with Learning Disabilities), Pedro S. Moyano of the Confederación Española de Personas con Discapacidad Física y Orgánica, COCEMFE (Spanish Federation of People with Physical and Learning Disabilities), Pablo Gómez of the Asociación de Centros Especiales de Empleo de Enfermos Mentales, ADECEM (Association of Special Employment Centers for People with Mental Illnesses), Anna Cohí of the Asociación FEAFES Integración Laboral FEAFES Empleo (FEAFES Association for Workplace Integration, FEAFES Work), and Fernando Rey (amadip.esment, 2010 INTEGRA award winner). The jury was chaired by Patricia Bueno, Spain and Portugal BBVA Director of Corporate Responsibility and Reputation.
This year’s winning initiative has been creating innovative, high-quality work opportunities for more than 25 years for persons with disabilities. These opportunities are tailored to the skills of each group and boast a highly professional business model within the sector working with the disabled.
It currently provides employment for more than 2,300 persons with intellectual disabilities (70%), physical and sensory disabilities (25%), and mental illness (5%). The award jury highlighted that this organization provides personalized and high-quality management for its employees. The organization has successfully combined its vision of integration into society and the workplace with a profitable business model.
With its 20 centers in the Biscay province, Lantegi Batuak works in several different lines of business, from the industrial sector and environmental services to records management with new technologies (digitization, automation management, destruction of documents), to the hotel industry (home-delivery restaurant services for the elderly and/or dependent persons and for shelters) and support services (hiring/guidance on technical assistance and renting support products)
Six other initiatives awarded
The 3rd BBVA INTEGRA Award also acknowledged the efforts of six other innovative initiatives with prize money of up to €50,000. The following initiatives were recognized for their records in raising the living standards of the disabled:
Federación de Asociaciones de Personas con Discapacidad Física y Orgánica de la Comunidad de Madrid, FAMMA-Cocemfe Madrid, (Federation of Associations of Persons with Physical and Mental Disabilities in the Autonomous Community of Madrid) for its initiative PREDIS, Programa de Reinserción Sociolaboral para Personas con Discapacidad (Program to Reintegrate Persons with Disabilities in Society and the Workforce)
Centro Especial de Empleo de la Asociación de Tutores y Amigos del Centro San Cebrián, ATACES C.E.E. “San Cebrián” (Special Employment Center of the Association of Tutors and Friends of the San Cebrián Center), for its initiative Transporte, Recogida y Valorización del aceite vegetal usado (Transport, Pickup, and Valuation of Used Vegetable Oil)
Centro Andaluz de Integración Laboral Unificada S.L., CAILU (Andalucian Center for Unified Integration into the Workplace), for its initiative “HYPATIA”, Inserción socio laboral de Mujeres con Discapacidad Víctimas de Violencia de Género en el Sector de Gestión Documental y Digitalización Certificada (Integration into society and the workforce, specifically into the records management and certified digitization sectors, of disabled women who have been the victim of gender-based violence
Centro Especial de Empleo Manantial Integra (Mantantial Integra Special Employment Center) for those with mental illnesses, for its initiative Ampliación de planta de los laboratorios (Laboratory staff expansion)
SALARCA, cooperative corporation for social initiative, for its initiative Innovación y Sostenibilidad: una apuesta de creación de empleo en el medio rural (Innovation and Sustainability: a push for rural job creation)
Fundosa Accesibilidad (Vía Libre), for its initiative Accesibilidad en medios de comunicación. Las nuevas tecnologías y la accesibilidad claves para personas con discapacidad (Accessibility in the media. Key new technologies and accessibility for persons with disabilities)
The BBVA INTEGRA Program
This INTEGRA Award is part of BBVA’s Corporate Responsibility policy, which can be summed up as “Working for a better future.”
BBVA’s INTEGRA program, launched in 2008, encourages the social and workplace integration of people with disabilities through the implementation and development of innovative policies. The program is designed to provide all the disabled people with whom BBVA has a direct or indirect relationship with the best response. Its customers, employees, suppliers and society in general.
The BBVA Chairman & CEO congratulated Lantegi Batuak and the six initiatives that were awarded and thanked them for their support of the disabled. He also thanked all those that collaborated in making the award possible as well as the members of the jury for their excellent work on this year’s award.
